Last week Jitterbug (5.5) finished the third and final book in the Explode the Code primer series. The primer series covers all the consonants. He worked very quickly through the three books, only starting them at the beginning of this school year in February. There were some days he did ten pages!
The books have helped to really reinforce all the consonant sounds. The last letter was ‘x’, and they used words like fox, box, and six as examples for that letter. There were a couple of pages at the end that had him picking out ending sounds for other words as well.
One of the things that I have appreciated about having him use this series is that he has learned how to form his letters. We use Handwriting Without Tears but at a slow pace and he is still working on capital letters in his handwriting book. By working through the ETC primer series he has learned how to form more of his letters, though he is not writing them beautifully as I would require in his handwriting book. He doesn’t follow the ruled lines very well, which is fine for someone learning to write. But this means that he can write words that he couldn’t write before he went through these books.
We’ve loved this series and I plan to use it with my others as well. Jitterbug is on to ETC Book 1 now, we will take it at a much slower pace! It covers short vowels, mostly CVC words until the end of the book. Right on target for where Jitterbug is reading.
