Jitterbug has finished his first Explode the Code workbook, Get Ready for the Code. There are three books in the primer series. He’s been doing quite a few pages everyday. These books just cover beginning sounds, and I believe only consonants. He actually moved through the book quite quickly considering we’ve taken a couple of weeks off this term for a holiday. (Never fear, we’ll be working right through the public school holidays to make up the time.)
See that ring he’s wearing? That’s my old high school class ring, it came out of our ‘r’ phonics miniature drawer. ‘R’ was the last letter covered in this book. That ring was so important back then, now it just lives in our ‘r’ drawer, the kids took turns wearing it all morning that day. Though Jitterbug knows the sounds that all the letters make, he still struggles to hear the sounds in the word. This primer series is good practice for him, and a confidence boost as well.
