We have this tradition of doing a treasure hunt on the first day of school. The kids were really looking forward to it this year.
We only have one kid who can read in our house, so last year I remember him quickly reading the clue and running off to find the next one with the others trailing behind. This year I made six clues, two for each of them, when they found one they had to come back to me to find the next one. That first one was for Jitterbug, he had to figure out that the letter was hidden in our toy school bus, not with the Magic School Bus DVDs which is where they went first. They came back saying they couldn’t find it and I asked them where else in our house we might have a school bus.
This clue said “Head to the South Pole!” It took a hint or two for Skeeterbug to realise it was under the globe.
Each clue led to a letter. I think this one was hidden in Ladybug’s play kitchen.
Better start digging! It was in the sandbox.
Waiting for big brother to figure out the word.
You got it!
The box was full of school supplies and new games.
This one’s for you, Mama! (A new green stapler.)
Simon! A keychain version, just like the big one I had as a kid.
Ladybug was thrilled with her new pencil case and little notebooks.
We played our new The Cat in the Hat: I Can Do That! game. You draw cards and complete such tasks as “Crawl to the bedroom and back with the fish on your head.” Fun.
We painted some suncatchers.
We played our new Busytown game. My kids have all loved Richard Scarry books, so this was good for us. You work as a team to reach your picnic before Pig Will and Pig Won’t eat all the food. The game board is as long as our table. They’ve gotten it out many times since then.
We also started our new video, Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego? I played the computer game as a kid, never knew there was a video. This one has 40 episodes, it was only $5.99 when I bought it.
Lots of fun for our first day, we started ‘real’ school the next day! I think that’s it for our first day posts…about time…we’re in our third week of school now!
