Explode the Code makes a primer series of books that comes before their regular series. I started Jitterbug with Book A this year, Get Ready for the Code. I had these to use with him last year but sensed he wasn’t ready. I’m so glad we waited, he is enthusiastic and working through the book quickly. I felt a bit guilty every time I read about someone using these with their children younger than Jitterbug, but I know it was the right decision for him. He has known his letter sounds for ages but has not been able to hear the different sounds in words until recently. These books are great for letter recognition and beginning sounds. Many people use these with their children who are too young to form their letters, they just do the pages orally. I actually had these books for Skeeterbug but didn’t use them for him, he jumped ahead quickly in his reading and never needed these. We might reach the point where Jitterbug does the same, but for now they are just right. I’m so excited that he is learning to read! And so is he!
I have a set of phonics miniatures that I get out when a new letter is introduced. All the kids love these!
F for finger!
The whole ‘f’ drawer. ‘F’ is an easy drawer to fill up!
Love that tongue that comes out whenever he is working.
Our ‘B’ drawer. Another easy one to fill. Not all of them have this many objects.
Here’s our drawers. I got these hardware drawers at Aldi’s a couple of years ago for about $20, they just had them again recently. On the front of each drawer are scrapbooking stickers.
I have to store these out of reach of Ladybug, she loves to rearrange everything! I have to double check each drawer before we use it. 🙂
