Olympus Mons is the largest volcano in the solar system and it is on the planet Mars. So to go with our chapter on Mars we made a volcano. We found rocks outside and rinsed them off and placed them in the bottom of the tray. We placed a tall, thin, glass jar in the middle. We made salt dough and molded it around the jar. Let dry. Then we painted it brown and later added some red for lava.
We added some bi-carb (baking soda) to the jar.
Poured in some vinegar and watched it explode!
Ladybug crept closer and closer until she was finally on the table to get a better view.
Later we added some drops of washing-up liquid (dishsoap) and some food colouring. Orange, then red.
The kids loved this. Really loved, loved, loved it. We’ve done this baking soda/vinegar thing before but nothing this fancy. It was actually an easy project, don’t be intimidated by the salt dough. It’s easy and quick to make. We did this over several days. Day One- Gather rocks, rinse, let dray. Day Two- Make salt dough and mold into volcano shape around the glass jar. Day Three- Paint brown. Day Four- Paint red/orange lava. Day Five- Eruption!!! Our days were not consecutive, this dragged on for a couple of weeks. I’m behind on posting about our activities, we’re actually a few of lessons ahead of Mars now.
