We’ve finally gotten back into doing some science again. One of the extra activities for Mars was to build an edible Mars rover out of lollies. Skeeterbug found this suggestion in his notebook some time ago and made sure to remind me that we needed to do this. First we used Google Images to see pictures of the various rovers and decided how to make it. Then we gathered all our bits and pieces and got to building. This project was great fun for the kids since they got to sample the various pieces as we went.
Someone was a bit annoyed at this point. I don’t remember why.
The others were happy.
Jitterbug eventually came around.
These were the closest things I could find to Twizzlers here. They are shorter than Twizzlers, thicker, and very chewy. Yum!
While I was taking pictures of our completed rover, I glanced up and noticed the kids salivating. 🙂
Ladybug wanted to take some pictures too:
I had some chocolate icing left over from a cake mix and that is what we used to hold everything together. Very fun. I’m glad they didn’t think to ask if they could build one for each of them! We also watched youtube videos of the Mars Curiosity landing. Skeeterbug especially liked this animated version describing how it was all supposed to happen (and did happen, apparently!).
One more Mars project to go, building a volcano. We’ve actually already started the next unit on Space Rocks. If we stay on track we should still be able to finish astronomy this year.
