We’ve been studying Ancient Egypt lately, and this has been our favourite book about hieroglyphs:
It comes with a stencil in the back of the book that you can use it to make your own hieroglyphs.
Nicely illustrated, great information on living in Ancient Egypt.
We used the stencil to make our own scrolls.
Actually, the kids lost interest before they actually became scrolls, but they had fun with the project anyway. Skeeterbug disappeared with the stencil and used it quite a bit (somehow I don’t have a picture of him this time). He was excited to be writing in code that no one else would be able to read. We also read Seeker of Knowledge, but didn’t enjoy it as much. I think next time we visit ancient history the kids will be older and enjoy this more.
Loving this Modern Rhyme About Ancient Times book for Ancient Egypt…
Poems relating to many aspects of Ancient Egypt, often humorous. Here is the poem about hieroglyphics, click to enlarge (sorry if a bit blurry).
There are more books in the series…Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, Ancient Africa. I believe they are out of print, I was able to find them all used at AbeBooks.
