This afternoon we made a solar sytem model out of balloons to go with our science lesson. We’ve just started Apologia Astronomy, this project goes with the very first lesson. There are so many ways to make a solar system model. This one was relatively easy and I am grateful. See the big red spot on Jupiter? Skeeterbug also drew some land on Earth but it’s hard to see. We put some rings on Saturn and that was as far as we went. Originally I intended the orange balloon for Jupiter but it wasn’t big enough.
We measured the diameter of each balloon to get the scale right. The sun should be much bigger of course. Someone on the Apologia yahoo group posted that at this scale it should have an 84 inch diameter. Here’s a composite of several pictures in an attempt to get them all in one shot for Skeeterbug’s notebook.
Easy project. It’s hanging over our school table. I wonder when I’ll be able to get away with taking it down!
