This week for ancient history we are learning about the earliest people. One of the suggested activities to go along with Story of the World Chapter 1 is to do a cave painting. We just happen to have a cave in our house. Or at least it might as well be a cave. It appears to be where the toilet used to be situated. At some point they added onto the house and relocated the toilet. The room has become an awkward closet, perfect for cave painting.
The night before we did this I lined the walls with paper. First, we read Discovery in the Cave. A great background on cave painting. It’s a true story about how some kids and their dog, Robot, found a huge cave with heaps of cave paintings inside.
Then we headed to our very own cave, turned off the ceiling light and turned on the flashlight! Skeeterbug very carefully made a tiger.
Jitterbug made all kinds of things. Seriously, when I asked him he had a really long list.
Painting in the dark, definitely a fun activity. I kept a wet rag nearby to catch any paint that accidentally got onto the walls. Really only an issue with Ladybug. The artwork is still decorating the inside of the cave and the kids are asking when we can do it again!
