This year we are using Story of the World Volume 1: Ancient Times as our history core. We are also using the Activity Guide that goes with it. One of the suggested activities for the introductory chapter was to do an archaeological dig. I purchased an inexpensive clay plate and had Skeeterbug decorate it.
Then I told him (probably the only time in his life) to break it.
I buried all the pieces along with some other archaeological treasures. The string is supposed to be a grid. I acted as the scribe and wrote down where we found each piece. While trying to keep the two younger ones from destroying the dig site.
Skeeterbug attempted to put the clay plate back together but eventually gave up. Other items we buried: Zoob piece, Lego banana, key, coin, wrapping from chocolate box, toy car. We talked about what these items would tell someone about our civilisation.
In the end our dig turned into a great place to drive cars. As to be expected at our house!
